The SAVE Act: What it is, why it’s so bad, and what we can do to stop it
The SAVE Act (HR 22), which has already passed in the House, would require Americans to provide documentary proof of citizenship in person to register or update their voter registration for federal elections. This unnecessary legislation would severely restrict voting access by:
- Limiting acceptable documentation to mainly passports, birth certificates, and naturalization papers
- Eliminating mail, BMV, and community registration options
- Forcing voters to register only at county election boards (just one per county)
The bill would disproportionately impact women who’ve changed their names, rural residents, older Americans, Black voters, military personnel, people with disabilities, and students. Having passed the House in 2024, it’s likely to pass again in 2025.
