| What Are LWVGDA Units? |
| The League of
Women Voters is a working, action-oriented organization
which depends on its members as volunteers to carry on
activities - learning about and becoming active in government.
The League attracts individuals who are interested in discussion,
exchanging ideas and viewpoints in order to arrive at solutions
to contemporary problems.
THE UNIT
The best means for accomplishing
the work of the League and for informing and assisting
members is the Unit. The unit is defined as a small group
of League members and other interested persons, meeting
in a convenient location at regular intervals. These
individuals learn together, explore opinions, and participate
in the League program by study, discussion, and action.
The unit is designed as a
small discussion group, but can be adapted to serve an
ever-wider range of purposes. It has gone beyond the
discussion format, becoming in some cases an action team,
a research group, or an ad hoc squad to reach a specific
goal.
Most local Leagues with 50
or more members have two or more units that meet each
month, in addition to general meetings, to encourage
greater participation. An ideal size for a unit is 15
to 20 members - large enough for a real exchange of ideas
and opinions and small enough to allow participation
by all.
The time
and place of the unit meetings are chosen to accommodate
the members who attend each unit. Daytime is more convenient
for some; nighttime for others; or a luncheon meeting
to allow working members to take part. The keys to
success are flexibility and convenience. |
