A Call to Action:

Membership Campaign

...
The LWV of Ohio has called for a membership drive to address declining membership, since the number of members directly impacts what we can expect to accomplish. The goal for the project is simple - raise statewide membership 33% so we can have 400 members by January 2007!

What does this mean for the Greater Dayton LWV? A 33% increase means 399 total members by January 2007. Our current membership count is 315. This is an improvement but we still need 84 new members in less than one year! (We actually need more because we lose some members each year due to moving, death, etc.) Although this task may seem daunting, other local leagues are having formidable success, such as the Cincinnati LWV.

What can you do to help? To meet our goal, every member must make a commitment to increase membership. I challenge you to commit to one of the recruiting ideas below. Let’s be one of the local leagues that meet the state’s goal!

  1. Ask a friend. If each member would recruit just one other member, our total membership would be 630! Studies have shown that one of the most effective ways to recruit new members is a personal invitation.
  2.  Come to our LWV Meet-Up and bring a friend.
  3.  Give gift memberships on Father’s/Mother’s Day, holidays ("stocking stuffers"), to a friend at home with pre-schoolers, or to celebrate a retirement.
  4.  Distribute membership material to new housing developments, community swimming pools,  supermarkets, community and senior centers, student unions, nursery schools, churches, etc. Contact the Greater Dayton LWV administrative office at 228-4041 to receive our membership brochures
  5.  Send one or two issues of your newsletters to potential members
  6.  Invite a friend to a General Meeting, especially one in which the topic would be of special interest to the potential member
  7.  Write an editorial piece for your local newspaper
  8.  Invite potential members to a neighborhood "Zip Code Party."
  9.  Create a pool of potential members by speaking to high school government classes.
  10.  To respond to the question "What does the League do?" develop a brief description of what your League does.
  11.  Join the membership committee. I need your help to accomplish our membership goals, such as recruiting new members, retaining current members, etc. You can work on a short term commitment or a long term commitment. It is up to you. To help, contact Teana Nicol at 395-3621 or teananicol@yahoo.com
